Student Council’s latest email, issued this afternoon, informs students, “We have received more than the required number of applications for the Sexual Assault and Hearing Panel — thank you to those who have applied! In order to encourage a greater breadth of candidates, the deadline for applying to the Hearing Panel has been extended to Sunday, October 13.”
As we reported last week, the new panel, overseen by Dean Nathan Miller, is extremely problematic. In sum, it invites activists to apply to a fact-finding committee that they know prosecutes our peers for sexual assault violations. As the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education notes, this compromises the basic expectation of impartiality in judiciary proceedings.
StuCo’s search for “greater breadth of candidates” highlights just how frightening and political this “application” to the Sexual Assault and Hearing Panel really is. Let’s hope someone in Parrish recognizes the illegality before Oct. 13.
